Young Associates: In Addition

On 29 April 2016, the Sainsbury Centre Young Associates presented In Addition, a pop-up exhibition of work by 14 artists in the Living Area and East End galleries.
In February the Young Associates put out a call for artists, to propose work to show amongst the Sainsbury collections and selected 14 artists to take part in the project.
The exhibition was an opportunity for young artists and to use the collection as a stimulus for new work, as well as an opportunity for the Young Associates to gain experience running projects in a public institution.
The artists made a site visit to the Sainsbury Centre and identified objects or areas of the building they would like to respond to.
NUA student Kimberley Warder placed herself amongst the artworks with a performance piece commenting on the representation of the female form in the gallery and Natalie Moles- Smith explored the architecture of the gallery space with her work ‘This Is Not a White Cube’ informed by how visitors behave in exhibition spaces.
Artist Anna Brass showed a series of sculptures and a film referencing the skilfully crafted artefacts in the Sainsbury Collection, the work explored the tension  between the virtuosity of such skilled objects and her own, made from cardboard, plaster, tape and poster paint. A similar approach was taken by Maddie Wheeler, whose collection of carved MDF vessels, shown in relation to the Hans Coper ceramics case, looked to challenge the form of the object represented and the physical object itself.
The event was attended by over 120 young people, many of whom were not regular visitors to the Sainsbury Centre.
