Arp believed that art could express natural laws and be created through the laws of chance in the same way as a river shaped the stones on its bed or a tree formed its leaves and fruit. From 1931 he created ‘concretions’ as abstract forms intended for natural settings.

Arp’s surreal object alludes to ancient vessels such as oil lamps and wine jugs but its blunt spout and wayward handle makes the object un-utilitarian.
