John Davies - Bucket Man
Davies, John (1946 - )
Bucket Man 1974
h 210.0 x w 152.2 x d. 137.0 cm
This sculpture was partly inspired by the artists own exertions fetching buckets of water (needed for plaster casting) as there was no tap in his studio at the time. Bucket Man is an example of John Davies' early work in which figures are engaged in ambiguous activities. As with many of his works, the figure is given what he called 'devices' to highlight aspects of its form. This figure is one of 58 drawings and sculptures by Davies that the Sainsburys have acquired for the Collection throughout the last three decades.
