This, the earliest known sculpture by Epstein, was one of two baby heads that the artist made as a student in Paris, inspired by the baby of a model who visited his studio. As well as this sculpture, the artist also produced a number of drawings of the infant and a slightly larger and more stylised bronze Baby Awake. Very little of Epstein’s work of this period survives. This was the first sculpture acquired by Robert Sainsbury
