Hans Coper arrived in Britain from Germany in 1939. He met Lucie Rie in 1947 and began work in her Albion Mews factory making ceramic buttons. They became great friends and collaborated for a period of some ten years, on domestic wares, which they would sign together, and they continued to exhibit together throughout the rest of his life. Coper's style developed, becoming more sculptural, drawing on, for example, Cycladic forms, similar to the figures in the Sainsbury Collection. Following his death in 1981 the Hans Coper Memorial Collection was acquired by the Sainsburys from his widow, Jane Coper.
