Before 1930, Soutine was known for an expressionistic style with distortions of form and exaggerated colour. This painting is an example of a more restrained period of working, colours cooled, forms relaxed and solidified, angry torment was replaced by sadness. The figure’s few distortions and cool dark colours accentuate the woman’s mood of calm reflection with a very slight air of tension.
